Mentoring program

Summer Medical Academy

Throughout the year high school students from underserved are mentored and tutored  by student physicians on different core academic skills including but not limited to biology and physical science to supplement their STEM curriculum. These newly learned skills are then connected to medical objectives in a ways students can understand. This provides students with a strong foundation in not only the sciences/ STEM but medical knowledge as well. Student are also taught different life skills such as financial planning and critical thinking skills. We also encourage scientific exposure through trips and events and offer tutoring to high school students in the Philadelphia community. Our current chapter is located at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM).

High School Programs

In the summer there is a 5 week long Summer Medical Academy in which students learn may skills that will not in only help them in high school and college but  will give them a foundations in their eventual acceptance into medical school. The same students are be followed for the course of 5 years and their progress will is monitored and support given at any interval.  This program is designed to compensate high school students during the summer. This will allow high school students from underserved communities participating in the program the ability to focus on their studies, with no need to worry about how they are going to support themselves or their families during the summer. In 2017, we are entering our third year of Summer Medical Academy at PCOM.

Currently Medicine for Education is working with 2 high schools in Philadelphia: Philadelphia School for Girls and Olney Charter High School. Olney Charter has created an individual club powered by the curriculum of Medicine for Education. We work to supplement the STEM curriculum and expose students to medical careers within their weekly club meetings.
