Medical Professionals and Students Mentoring and Guiding Inner City Students in STEM and Medicine

This program has helped me become more familiar with what it truly means to embark on the journey of medical school and to take on the challenges that accompany it. For many years I've known that I wanted to work in the medical field, but I didn't know exactly what I wanted to do. Doctors for Education has exposed me to the many specialties and paths I can choose from and has allowed me to connect with medical students that have shared their own personal experiences with me, shared their knowledge and acted as true supporters and mentors. Doctors for Education has solidified my goal in hopefully achieving great things in a field that I love.

Testimonials
"The path to medical school is a very challenging and daunting process for anyone, especially if you are the first person from your family, school, or community to apply or even go to college. I love being a mentor because I get to be a role model for these extremely capable students and I get to contribute to their interest in medicine which flourishes as a result of the Medicine for Education organization."
- Tara, PCOM Student Mentor and 2016-2017 PCOM chapter president
"Mentoring to means to me the opportunity to teach and learn from young minds eager to be great. It allows me to grow their perspective and my own as well."
- Liz, PCOM Student Mentor
"Personally I strongly believe that this program has helped me mature as a student and a person. Before I even started this program I had little to strive for, I had no clue as to what I wanted my future to look like or any career that I might have wanted to pursue in the sciences. But because of Medicine for Education,my mentors, and my teachers who have exposed me to so many different possibilities for a career in the medical field I was finally able to create and set goals for myself; and honestly I don't think I could have done it without them."- Summer B., Girls High
" The Doctors for Education has helped me to gain more insight on the medical field and has helped me to know some of things that will be expected of me when I get there. For instance, how to answer a professors questions, knowing Latin terms, and having knowledge about body systems and different bodily processes. I was able to learn more about what to do in certain incidences when people are having health issues such as in the case of a heat attack, stroke, and angina. I became more knowledgeable about the different structures of the body, which has helped me to give some valuable health information to my family. I am more aware of the effects of certain diseases and how to stop the risk of obtaining them. Also I learned some osteopathic techniques they are good pain relievers. Lastly, the bonding with my mentors helped to open up more and to be understanding towards others who have been through the same experiences as me. I learned some valuable leadership skills as well, and it helped me to build my character." -Isis G., Girls High
"This program has helped me realized that I want to be involved in the medical field and that it is definitely the best fit for me. Last year, we identified the organs in the human body such as the heart, the lungs, and the kidneys from cadavers in the lab to even furthering our knowledge by creating games to help us remember how the organs function. This year, we covered the muscles in the arms and in the hands, as well as, memorizing the bones in the hands. Throughout this program, the knowledge that I have gained is extensive and continues to grow to this day." -Caitlin M., Girls High
"Being able to communicate with young girls from underserved communities is a privilege that Medicine for Education has provided me. It has allowed me to interact and advise students to pursue dreams they would have a hard time achieving without guidance. In addition, mentoring has allowed me to appreciate the struggles low income communities deal with on a regular basis in the Inner cities." - Mohammed A., PCOM Student Mentor

"Mentoring has given me an opportunity to use my experience, both successes and failures, to help those with similar goals. I wouldn't be where I am without the support and counsel of others, so it's been rewarding to be able to share that with others. It also gives me a different perspective as I continue to learn and work towards my goals." - Eleanora R., PCOM Student Mentor

"I had mentors in my life that were kind enough to guide me through many decisions and lend advice that helped shape my career and life goals. Medicine for education is a great way to be able to continue the necessary tradition of guiding others while giving back to the local community. ." - Imraan J., PCOM Student Mentor

The program, DOctors for Education, has given me a first-hand insight of the medical world. This program gave regular high school students a chance to experience things that they might have never experienced before such as going to see cadavers. I am so thankful that I attended this program which gave me a broad spectrum of things to learn such as basic sciences, medical terminology, learning osteopathic manipulative treatment, and naming bones and identifying muscles. During this program, we actually got to see and touch real human cadavers, which many high school students do not experience until they get to medical school. I believe that this program, over a span of a summer, helped to increase my medical knowledge and expose me to the medical world. Vicki H., Girls High
